The Disastrous Tidal Wave in I Japan.
LATER PARTICULARS. 78,000 LIVES LOST. (Per Press Association ) Sydney, This Day. The mail steamer brings a few additional particulars of the earthquake in Japan. Over 73,000 lives were lost, 150 miles of coast line were affected by the wave, and the whole of i one town disappeared — 2,973 houses being engulfed. Professor Koochibe, of the Imperial University, attributes the waves to a land slip, which geologists call " taskarora," off the coast. A huge cavity exists, 600 miles long, 3400 miles wide, with a depth of frorr. 3000 to 4000 fathoms. The slope in this " taskarora " is almost perpendicular, and a land slip would cause a gigantic wave, as well as earthquakes.
