Stock Market.
Messrs Gorton and Son report : — We held a splendid sale at Balls on Tuesday. The sheep were of a decidedly better class than usual, and met with a ready sale, all the sheep offered being sold under the hammer at prices in favour of vendors. Cattle came forward in small numbers, and all were sold but one cow. We quote : Fat cows, L4ssto L 5 Is ; 3 years steers, L 4 ; weaners and year* lings, 30s ; forward heifers, £3 15s ; 2tooth wethers, 10s 6d ; 2 and 4-tooth ewes in lamb, 9s 6d ; ewes in lamb, mixed ages, 8s to 8s lid ; fat ewes, 10s to 10s 3d ; store pigs, 13s 6d to 555. Messrs F. R. Jackson and Co. report on their Johnsonville sale, held yesterday :— The beef entered was all of good quality, and bidding was brisk throughout the sale. Sheep were in limited numbers and sold well. Cattle—Bullocks, L 7 5s to L 8; cows, Ls7s6d to L 5 12s 6d, equal to 17s 6d for ox and 16s for cow's beef the lOOlbs. SheepWethers, 12s Id to 13s Id ; ewes, 9s 3d to 10s. (Per Press Association.) Christchurch, July 15. At the Addington market to-day, the yarding of all classes of stock (with the exception of store sheep) was sliahtly the average. Fat cattle.— Good entry, mostly of good to prime quality, with a few pens cf extra pime steers. The competition for good lots was brisk, a few pens of extra prime 5-yr-old steers making L 9 7a 6d, or fully 20s per lOOlbs. Dairy cows and milkers were poorly represented, with one or two exceptions, good springers selling at from L 7 to L 8 15s. Inferior sorts are hard to quit. Store cattle were very poor in entry, and little business was doing. Fat Sheep — Prices for the better classes of freezers were well maintained. Extra heavy crossbred wethers, 19s to 21s ; freezing, 16s to 18s ; lighter sorts, 12s 9d to 13s 9d ; freezing maiden ewes, 14s to 16s ; extra heavy, 18s lOd ; butchers' good ewes, 13s to 16s lOd ; medium, 9s to 12s 9d ; inferior sorts, 8s ; merino wethers, 9s 9d to 11s ; ewes, 6s lOd to Us. Store sheep — A small entry, a good proportion being turnip sheep and crossbred ewes, with one or two pens of hoggets, owners' reserves being above what buyers cared to give. A few sales were made. Hoggets, 7s to 10s 6d ; 4-tooth wethers, 13s 6d to 14s. Fat Lambs— A small entry. Prices were hardly firm. Freezing lambs, from 9s to 11s ; second class, 7s to Bst 6d. Pigs — Medium entry. The competition all round was hardly as brisk as before, baconers making from 30s to 45s 6d, or from 3£d to 3&d per lb ; porkers, 19s to 255.
