The retiring Railway Commissioners have presented reports, showing that during the two years and a quarter which they held office the saving of £270,000 was effected, which, in conjunction with the reconstruction retrenchment introduced by the previous board, resulted in an annual reduction of £940,000 in the working cost of the railways since the end of the old regime in 1892. The liquidator, in giving evidence before the Chaffey Commission, said the company had been crushed through excessive financing, and gave an instance where 68 per cent had been paid for a small sum. Brisbane, June 30.
