«. (Per Press Association. l Dunedin, June 9. George Strain, injured by a fall of clay in Gore's brickyard at Wingatui, died in the hospital to-day. He leaves a wife and one child. Christchurch, Jane 9. It is estimated that by the terms of the late Mr Gammack's will the lending department of the Public Library will receive an income of £600 per annum till death of testator's widow, and over ,£IOOO a year afterwards The Board of Education to-day decided to take steps to establish classes at which teachers and others may attend fur inannal and technical instruction at the Normal School. It was also decided to hold at the same school as soon after January Ist as possible an exhibition of articles made in various schools of the district and give certificates of merit to teachers of schools where proficiency in manual instruction is shown. Auckland, June 9. At the Police Court, George H. Powley was charged with having on the 9th May assaulted W. J. Geddis, one of the pro* prietors of the Observer, by striking him on the head face and hands with a Btick. Mr Cotter, who appeared for defendant, pleaded guilty but under very provocing circumstances. The assault arose out of a paragraph in the Observer. Mr Northcroft, S.M., in giving judgment aaid if he held that an article like that afforded a man the right to assault another man the precedent would be a very dangerous one. He would impose a fine of £5 and £3 3s costs. Wellington, Jane 9. At tho annual conference of delegates from the Counties Association which opens here at 10.30 on Friday, June 19, it is anticipated that folly seventy delegates will be present. Dansvirke, This Day. An elderly man named MacNeil was found desd this morning at the back of the Masonic Hotel. It appeared he had fallen down a flight of six steps, and broke his neck. Stratford, This Day. Several of the Auckland members of Parliament broke the journey here and were banquetted by the townspeople. They promised to support the application to the Government to push on metalling East road and thus afford early communication with Auckland. Napier, This Day. A series of earthquakes was experienced this morning between 2 o'clock and 2.15. The first two were unusually violent and most severe felt for some years. The rattling of windows and crockery aroused everybody. Then at intervals of a few minutes came three more tremors but not so violent as the first.
