Government has decided to improve the condition of the silver currency in the colony, and has arranged with the Banks to retire ail worn and mutilated com which may be presented at any of their branches up to 31st August next. It is gazetted than the Queen has approved the re ten r ion of the title of "honroable" by W. P. Reeves on his quitting office after three years' service as a member of the Executive Council of New Zealand. Regulations under " The Government Life Insurance Act;, 1886," have been amended to provide tha«s in cases of insurances effected on lives of Ministers of religion, whose names are duly registered under " The Marriage Act, 1880," deduc tions shall be made from the rates of premiums as followt— (a) whole life insurances, deduction at the rate of five per cent, per annum calculated upon the whole premium : (b) endowment insurances, deduction at the rate of five per cent, per annum calculated upon temporary insurance pure premium only; (c) double endowment insurances, no deduction. To-night's Gazette contains a list showing all land vested in the Public Trustee under " The Unclaimed Lands Act, 1894," up to 3ist March lasn wilh the names of persons believed by the Public Trustee to have any interest therein. This Day. All the licenses were granted by the committee up to 11, with permission to extinguish lights at that hour. The licensee of the Star Hotel was cautioned on complaints from the police of Sunday trading and encouraging prostitutes. Mrs Weiss was granted a New Zealand wine license. Auckland, June 4. The Mayor has paid over to the Public Trustee X' 1707 19s 4d, being the sum raised in Auckland for the Brunnerton Belief Fund less certain expenses. The New Zealand Shipping Company is collecting a general average of 1 per cent on the cargo of the Waikato owing to lire aud damage resulting to the cargo from water. This will bring in £1000. The damage is estimated at .£SOO. At the Police Court to-day a number of charges were brought against Walter Henry Massy, manager for Bycrof t and Company's mill, in connection with the Factory Act. The charges were of employing lads under 26 without having previously obtained certificates in the form prescribed by the Act. The fines and costs amounted to about £10. I Dunedin, This Day. ! Tne residence of Jas. Park, auctioneer, Rosiyn, was burned down last night. The fire broke out in the servant's room. The inmates barely escaped. Insurances — £600 in the Northern ; furniture, £500 m the South British.
