The S.S. Waikato on Fire.

o (Per Press Association.) Auckland, This Day. Arrived, s.s. Waikato from London. About the meridian of Cape Leuwin on April 17 th a lire broke ont in No. 3 hold. After pouring water for three hours into the hold the fire was subdued. On examination it was discovered the outbreak had evidently arisen in some tarred felt among a part of the Auckland cargo between decks. Presumably it was due to spontaneous combustion. Six cases were jettisoned. It is thought tho damage is not very great. Probably more cargo was damaged by the water tban by the fire. She will leave about next Saturday for Wellington.
