Mr Carroll Before His ConStituents.
(Per Press Association) Gisbokne, This Day. The Hon. J. Carroll, addressing his constituents, replied at length to Capt. Russell's speech here. Referring to the Uriwera trip he said it was a deliberate misrepresentation for the purpose of damaging him in the statement that a cost of £600 was incurred by him on that trip. The cost of the trip was only £150, and the Premier and himself had only received the statutory travelling allowance of 80s a day for the ten days the journey occupied, the balance going in horse hire, guides, etc. The £600 referred included a whole year's charges j on the Civil list, covering cost of the successful settlement of the Wanganni river and other difficulties. A vote of thanks and confidence in Mr Carroll and j the Government was carried.
