« I Per Press Association.! Napier, May 25. One of Hawke's Bay's oldest settlers pifcted away on Satnrday-Mr F. W. 0. Sturm, aged 85. He came to New Zealand before it was a British colony, forming one of the scientific expedition under Baron Hochstetter sent out by the Austrian Government, and he was so enamoured of the country that he decided to remain behind when the expedition returned, Dunedin, May 26. A public meeting to-night decided to form a branch of the Navy League. A Chinaman named Gum Git has been committed for trial at the Police Court for defiling a girl, aged 12 years and ton months. The evidence was of a most revolting character. The girls who were concerned in this case are different from those who gave evidence against the previously convicted Chinaman. Another charge against Gum Git remains to be dealt with. Wellington, This Day Annie Brown, wbose conviction on a charge of performing an illegal operation was confirmed by the Appeal Court, will probably be brought up for sentence on Monday next. The Magisterial enquiry began to-day into the circumstances attending the accident of the barque Coromandel, which capsized iv the harbour after her arrival from Westport. So far no new facts have beeh elicited. The Evening Post appeared to-night as an eight page paper. Auckland, May 26. Mr lining, M.H R. for Waipa, addressed his constituents at Clevedon and received a vote of thanks and confidence. His Excellency the Governor gave a ball to-night in honour of her Majesty's Birthday. It was the most brilliant function for years past. Over 600 invitations were issued. Amongst the guests were Admiral Bridge and the principal officers of the Squadron. A handsome marble monument has been erected in memory of the officers and men of Mercer's Battery, 12ih, 14th, 40th and 65th regiments, who fell there. It has been erected to the order of Major Elliot, of the 40th Regiment, from funds subscribed by various regiments. Capt. Hunter Blair originated the movement now accomplished. Christchurch, May 26. Hubert Medley, 66 years of age, died suddenly this afternoon, it is snpposed from heart disease.
