(Per Press Association). Brisbane, May 25. The Chief Justice has uiven an interesting decision on the question whether writs issued in ono Colony can be enforced iv another. He has decided that where colonies have joined the Federal Council the writ of one colony is enforce able in the others belonging to the Federation, and runs through federated Australia ns represented by iho Council. But where n colony has not. joined the Council the writ s^tops at the border of the unfederated colony. Sydney, May 26. In the Legislative Assembly notice has been given by a private member of the introduction of a Bill substituting penal servitude for capital punishment. v In connection with the reduction of the sugar duties, the manager of the Colonial Su»ar Company has writteu to the representatives of the sugar districts offering certain important concessions. These are considered indicative that the company arc prepared to accept the loss occasioned by the removal of the duties, and that acting on tho Premier's advice they will share tho loss with the growers. Melbourne, May 20. The failuro of the harvest owing to drought and consequent loss of the wheat export traffic is seriously affecting the railway revenue. The revenue to date, compared with the eorrespondiny period of last year, shows a, decrease iv revenue from this source of over L 120,000. Sydney, May 26. Captain Richards tried hard to get the Karoola out of clanger, out the terrible sea that was running prevented him. The mate, Stuart, and a seaman named Anderson perished. Nothing was saved from the vessel, but if the weather moderates there will be some chnnce of saving the cargo or some portion of it.
