A Marine Monster.
(Per Press Association) Wellington, May 21. For some considerable time past vessels passing a small bay near Pelorus Sound have been visited both in the day time and at night by a peculiar marine creature of the whale species. Sometimes it would swim just ahead of the steamers with its tail touching tbe stem. Yesterday afternoon as the Graf ton passed the bay mentioned, Sir James Hector, who was on buard, stationed himself in tbe bow to satisfy himself as to the nature of the animal. Sir James pronounced it to be a beluga, a fish of the cetaceous order, the only one he had seen in New Zealand. He stated that there was no specimen of it in the Colonial museum, though the skull of one was secured from the Maoris some years ago. In his opinion the object of the animal's antics was to rub the barnacles off its back against the ship's side. _____———.
