A Political Scandal.

(Per Press Association.) Sydney, May 19. The charge made by Mr Varney Parkes against the Public Works Committee which the Government has promised that a Royal Commission shall enquire into is that a certain firm of contractors obtained £40,000 improperly. Mr Parkes did not wish to infer that the Minister had been guilty of corruption, but said lie had been guilty of carelessness, which was quite as bad. and by his stupid and foolish administration he had put the public to a loss which he believed had been greater than if the Minister had been corrupt. He insinuated that there had been collusion between some officer of the Department and the contractor. The Minister's replies in the face of so grave an incident are considered to have been rather weak. Judge Murray has been appointed to conduct the investigation into Mr Varney Parkes' charges against the Public Works Committee of the Legislative Assembly.
