This morning's Marton Mercury says : — Mr F. Hunt intends starting a 8 this morning on his bicycle, bound for Wanganui, with the intention if possible of lowering the record for the distance of 23 miles, which at present stands at lhr 27mins, held by Allen, of Wanganui. In the last issue of the New Zealand Graphic appears a well-executed photograph of a family team of bowlers — Messrs H. W. Brookes (skip), C. Brookes (No. 2), C. G. Brookes (leader) and A. H. Brookes (No. 3), the quartette represent, ing, the father and his three sons. Mr H. W. Brookes will be remembered as one of the Auckland team of bowlers that visited Wanganui last season. A few years ago red deer were numerous on the ranges along the East Coast but since nearly all the Crown land has been leased or sold, one or two unscrupulous, or starving, settlers have not only killed and eaten all the wild pigs and cattle, which they were welcome to, but most of tbe red deer as well. But what else can be expected when a *' Liberal Government " charged meai'l per acre for land that will not grow grass, let alone produce beef and mutton?
