♦ Entries for Mr Beckett's Marton sale, to be held on May 22nd, are published to-day. Messrs Batliff Bros advertise a 250 acre farm, near Feilding, to lease with a purchasing clause. We have to thank the Secretary, Mr A. B. W 7 ratt, for a complimentary ticket for tbe Colyton Cricket Club concert and ball to be held on the 20th inst. The Excelsior Skating Bink was very largely patronised on Saturday evening last, when it was opened for the first time this season. A substantial going busiuess in Ashurst is advertised for sale to-day by Mr G. J. Scofct, of Palmerston North, Commission agent. Fuil particulars can be obtained on application to this office. William W. Warke, a solicitor of ths Irish Courts, out of employment for some time, pave himself into cutody at Melbourne as a vaprant. He was discharged by Mr Panton, and recommended to the Charity organisation Seciety. On Thursday last (says the Hastings Standard" two swaggers at Waimarama were poisoned by drinking water containing arsenic used for sheep-dipping purposes. Dr Nairn was sent for, and soon had the men out of danger. Gattle are dying in hundreds daily in the Townsvifie district, Queensland, from tbe tick plague, with the prospect of scarcely a beast being saved. An Ingham telegram states tbat the disease is spreading in a southerly direction. Dr McCarthy will visit Birmingbam every Wednesday morning where he may be consulted at Mr Harrison's Hotel. In connection with the syndicate which Mr Martin Kennedy has gone home to float to take over tbe brewing interests of Wellington, it is stated that, as an inducement to investors, the promoters will guarantee a dividend of 7*per cent to start with. There was a fair attendance at the sacred concert given iv the Assembly Rooms last evening by Mr F. DeLisle's company. The items were well rendered and much appreciated by the audience. Pressure on our space prevents our giving a detailed report. In our advertising columns MrC.L. Cutler, pianoforte maker, has a notice which should prove of interest to the residents of Feilding and the surrounding district. Mr Cutler will arrive in this town on Wednesday next to place his services at the disposal of those whose musical instruments require them. A public meeting was held at Marton on Friday evening to consider the railway station question. It was decided by 120 to 115 to oppose the present station being enlarged and to request Government to erect a permanent station with refreshment room at the junction, maintaining the present station for the purpose of booking passengers. At the meeting of the Pohangina County Council on Saturday last it was resolved that the clerk write to the Palmerston North Licensing Committee expressing the opinion that this Council is against the granting oil any hotel license in or near the Pohangina Township, Crs Dickin, Wagstaff, Brown and Bell voted for and Ors Fraser, Vicary and Selby against the motion. The French authorities have a very drastic method of dealing with bookmakers on racecourses. M. Tible, a Freuch bookmaker, was arrested on September 19th last for calling tho odds. There was found upon him a sum of .£240, which was confiscated, and on October 24th he was sentenced to lo days' imprisonment and a fine of SOOOf (£120). He appealed against this verdict, but the conviction was confirmed, with costs. Several games were played at the Feilding golf links on Saturday. During the present season there will be tournaments for trophies presented by H. P. Lance, W. Dickson, aud Messrs Hayne and Lloyd. These are for both Jadies and gentlemen. The club has several new members this season, being nearly three times as stroDg as last year. The pavilion has been improved for the uso of members. Several ladies kindly supply afternoon toaon Saturdays for whicli the thanks of ths club are duo. The New York Daily Tribune says that when Madame Mclba was iv Washington recently she met Speaker F.ecd in the. Capitol. " Why don't you have a light here ? " she said to him in laughing protest. " I v/ould much rather sec a fight than hear a speech/ " Then why didn't you let mo know you were comiDg ? " said speaker Eeed gallantly. •' I would have had a light for yuur especial delight, and if you will only wait I will go on the floor and start a row this minute." But Madame Mclba couldn't wait, and the Speaker's offer came to naujiht. There was a good attendance at the Pohangina Public Hall on Friday evening, when a concert was given uuder the direction of Mrs Welsh, in aid of the hall funds. The concert was a novel one for Pohangina, as it mainly consisted of items by the school children. The singing of the children was very creditable. On the motion of the chairman (Mr F. Pirani M.H.R.), a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the performers and Mrs Welsh, Mrs Thornton for the use of the piano, and all those who had contributed to the concert. After the entertainment an enjoyable dance was held, at which Mr Turner made an efficient M.C, the music being supplied by Messrs Hartley, Fraser and others. The net proceeds of the affair were L 3 lis, an acceptable addition to the hall funds. A meeting of tbe Feilding Prohibition League was held on Friday evening last when a lot of useful business was transacted. A final settling of accounts in connection with the Easter Demonstration was made. It is worthy of notice that though on the last two occasions of the Temperance Demonstration the weather has been such as to entail a loss each time, the committee have paid all accounts in full, leaving no debit balance for the next year. Correspondence was received from the Hon. Secretary of the Palmerston North Convention Committee re delegates to convention to be held on 25th and 26tb of this month, Messrs T. S. Scott and W. G. Shearer were appointed to represent the league, and Messrs Greenwood and J. C. Thompson the Band of Hope. One new member was enrolled and a considerable amount of routine business dealt with.
