Death from Swallowing a Needle. FURTHER PARTICULARS.

Says the Post :— A peculiarly distressing case of bereavement, which on its smaller scale should appeal to the public quite as forcibly as the Brunner disaster, comes under our notice. One day last week a man named James Brooks, of Karori, who was working ' at Terawhiti, felt a prickling sensation in his throat while in the act of eating his mid-day meal. Soon ifc'becanae so painful that he was unable to continue eating, and as his sufferings grew more and more intense, and bleeding from the mouth set in, he came to the hospital for medical aid. There he became worse and worse, and though the staff did all that was possible, he could get no relief. All Thursday night Dr Ewart sat up with him, but the cause of the mysterious pains could not be discovered, and on Friday the poor fellow died in most intense agony. On a post mortem examination being made, it was found that the deceased had swallowed a needle, which had made its way to the stomach and there opened a bloodvessel, the hemorrhage from which was the immediate cause of death. And now Mrs Brooks, with five children, whose ages range from ten years to only seven montns, are thrown upon the mercy of the world. Will not the public rally to their relief ? Mr Bulkley, Mayor of Karori, is open-; ing a subscription list in the borough, which can be found at the Karori store, and we shall be glad to receive at our publishing office any sums that may be sent there.
