Wheat v. Gold.
« " People in Sydney don't know it, but there are more fortunes being made in Riverina than in Coolgardie," said Mr Curruthers recently at Sydney to an interviewer. " The average of wheat this year was 13 bushels, that is a substantial return for land which was previously held at 3d per acre. I say, with a knowledge of what I am talking about, that the two best paying industries in the colony now are wool and wheat growing, despite the croaking of the squatters. Even on the sharing system squatters are getting LI per acre rent from the croppers. Most people in the metropolis don't realise what great work is going on in the Rivarina, but those resident there do, and so do the people of Victoria generally. The consequence was that on the recent tour I had deputations of Victorians once I crossed the border wanting to know when aud where they could get laud."
