A SHIP DESTROYED BY FIRE. (Per Press Association). Sydney, May 9. The liquidator of the Mercantile Bank in Melbourne has declared a dividend of lOd in the pound, making 6s Sd paid in all. Ha does nol anticipate a further dividend until next year. The properties taken over from the debtors in 1894. valued at L 98.000, appreciated in value last year to L 168.000. Hareford's story was found to be a fabrication. There is reap on to believe that he is not altogether unacquainted with the New Zealand gaols, nnd the authorities in the latter colony believe he is identical with the prisoner who escaped from custody some time ago. Sailed Alameda, for 'Frisco via Auckland. News received from 'Frisco states that the barque Centaur was destroyed by fare afc sea. She was bound to Brisbane with a cargo of wheat. Brisbane, May 11. The steamer Fiado, bound from Noumea to Newcastle, has put in here with her boilers in a state of collapse. This Day. Captain Bird, of the Miowera, is negotiating with the Government on behalf of Huddart, Parker and to extend the Vancouver service to Queensland if sufficient inducement is offered. Brisbane will be made the first port of call and the last of departure.
