Feilding Borough Council.
Tbe ordinary monthly meeting of the Feilding Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last evening. Present — His Worship the Mayor (Mr W. A. L. Bailey), Councillors G. H. Say well, W Reid, T. R. Chamberlain, G. W. Fowles, E. Goodbehere, J. Gould, H. Worsfold. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Correspondence was received and dealt with as follows : — From Cr Shearer, apology for nonattendance. — Accepted. From T. W. K. Foster, claiming £10 damage to horse, alleged to have been caused through faulty bridge (£5 for loss of service and £5 for depreciation in value). From W. B. Retemeyer, requesting Council to remove some willows from centre of Kiwitea river bed, opposite his section ; also, to give him an approach to the new bridge. From G. Foster (secretary Bed Star Football Club) and P. P. Giesen (secretary Feilding Football Club), applying for th« use of the Oval for playing football on during this winter, and offering to .pay £1 each for its use. — Referred to the Recreation Reserve Committee. From W. B. Barker, poundkeeper and ranger, applying for re-appoint-ment to the position for another year, his term being up at the end of this month. From C P. Mai, stating he had sold section No 69 to Mr J. Ruff.—Alteration made as requested. from J. Prior, solicitor, requesting thafche name of W. S. Hill be placed on rate roll for section 42, in place of J. H.V, Blackmore. — Alteration made as requested. From F. Flavall, borough inspector, |-a report. From Finance Committee, a report recommending accounts amounting to £131 2s sd, be passed for payment. — Adopted. From Mrs E. Mahon, applying to have her name placed on rate roll in place of Miss Halcomb for sections 63 and 64, suburban. — Alteration made as requested. From Bartholomew Bros., applying for permission to continue tramway line past front of new building at their their timber yard, facing Kim bolton road ; also to erect two 2ft 6in stag ing in front of doors of same buildings. From Secretary to Treasury, vouch er for £286 final payment on account of Kiwitea bridge loan, and stating the necessary certificates would require to bo sent to enable a further loan of £100 to be considered. From Barraud and Abraham, requesting their names be placed on rate roll for section 291, From Railway Department, stating they had decided not to change the name of the Makino station. From Mayor of Greymouth, thanking the Mayor and residents of Feilding for the donation of £40 4s 6d to the Brunner Relief Fund. From Clerk Kiwitea County Council, stating that body did not consider they were liable for cost of survey and purchase of land for road diversion to Kiwitea bridge. From C. L. Daniel and S. Sidet, requesting alteration of name on rate roll from former to latter for section 699. — Agreed to. From Resident Engineer Railways Department, Wanganui, approving of crossing over railway line at South street, and agreeing to construct it on receipt of £26. From F. F. Martin, Secretary Municipal Association, stating a Conference of delegates would be held in Welling, ton about the first week in the ensuing session of Parliament, From A. K. Blundell, stock inspector, applying to be supplied with names of persons to whom slaughter house licenses had been granted. From R. F. Haybittle, complaining that the charges as imposed for car•riages were excessive, and considering that one fee (of 20s) for a brake should permit of its carrying passengere as well as goods. From J. Ruff, H. Mingins, W. Reid, and W. Corpe, requesting the Council to culvert and form about five chains of Port street, from Churcher street towards Pharazyn street. From E. Charles, stating he had finished his contract in Sherwill street. From 0. J. Wickham, drawing the Council's attention to condition of drains and watertables opposite his property, Denbigh street, and requesting that they be cleaned out. — Will be attended to as soon as possible. The Public Works Committee recommended : — (1). That Arnott street be formed and metalled as far as Mr Thomas' gate; (2). That the ditch complained of by Mr Little be not cleaned out until the outlet through private property is opened up ; (3). They found that the culvert complained of by Mr Hill and others was choked. It has since been opened and they were of opinion that it will carry all ordinary storm water if the drain through private property is enlarged ; (4). That the bridge on Makino road opposite gravel pit is rotten and advise that it be removed and be replaced by 18-inch pipes, which will be ample to carryoverflow from pit, which is all that it is required to do ; (5). That two extra men be engaged for a few weeks to reduce the arrears of work. — Adopted. From C. Carr, stating the watercourse in South street was blocked and requesting that it be cleaned out and a culvert put in. From Dr Johnston requesting that the watercourse opposite his sections in Stafford street be opened up. The Mayor reported that Mrs Halley had applied for charitable aid for herself and two children ; also, that Mrs Brooks had applied for charitable aid for herself and five children. Resolved, That Mr Barker's appointment as poundkeeper and ranger be extended for a further term of 12 months on same terms as before. Proposed by Cr Chamberlain, seconded by Cr Reid, That the clump of < willows in the Eiwitea stream opposite Mr W. B. Retemeyer's property be removed at once, and that his request for an outlet to the new bridge be referred to the Public Works Committee to report at next meeting of the Council. — Carried. Resolved, That Messrs Bartholomew Bros.' application for a tramway, etc., be granted during the pleasure of the Council. Proposed by Cr Goodbehere, secouded by Or Saywell, That the claim of Mr Foster re injury tp his horse be referred to a subcommittee consisting of Crs Gpuld, Reid, and Chamberlain' to report at next meeting of the Council.—Carried. . Conference to be held in Wellington at a future date. Proposed by Cr Goodbehere, seconded by Cr Say well, That the conditions mentioned in the letter from the Resident Engineer re formation of a level crossing at South street be accepted, and the sum of £26 be forwarded to him. — Carried. Resolved, That the matter complained of by C. Carr be referred to the Public Works Committee, with power to act. Proposed by Cr Goodbehere, seconded by Cr Fowles, That a cheque for 75 per cent, on account of contract for metal' ling Sherwill street be paid bo Mr Charles, as soon as the work is passed by the Inspector.— Carried. Proposed by Cr Chamberlain, seconded by Cr Gonld, That the .request of Messrs Ruff, Mingins, Reid, and Corpe to culvert and form about five chains of road in Port street, be referred to the Public Works Committee to inspect and report at next meeting of the Council.— Carried. Proposed by Cr Reid, seconded by, Cr Chamberlain, That the road workman be instructed to clear all briars and gorse in Port street and all other streets where it is growing. — Negatived. Proposed by Cr Gould, seconded by Cr Fowles, That the Mayor write to Cr Bramwell, conveying to him an expression of sympathy and condolence on his bereavement. — Carried. v Resolved, That the tender of R. J. Thompson for the supply of charitable aid rations (at 3s per ration), according to specifications, be accepted. Proposed by Cr Goodbehere, seconded by Cr Saywell, That the rent of that portion of the Municipal building occupied by the Feilding Library be fixed at i2O per annum, but that a concession of £5 be made on first year's rent.—Carried. Proposed by Cr Chamberlain, seconded by Cr Reid, That the estimates as read be adopted, and that public notice be given that it is the intention of the / Feilding Borough Council at a meeting to be held on the 25th day of May to make a general rate of Is 3d in the 4 '■. and a Library rate of Id in the £ on the rateable value of all the rateable property within the Borough of Feilding tor the financial year ending March 31, 1897, such rates to be payable in one sum on the Ist day of June. Resolved, That the Cemetery Committee be authorised to place about 20 loads of metal on the cemetery road. The Council then adjourned.
