Buchanan, member for Wairarapa. addressed his constituents at Greytown, receiving a unanimous vote of thanks. He unnounced he would again contest the eeat. At a met-ting attended by a number of representatives of religious bodies and schools of the City, it was resolved to take immediate 6Ceps to organise opposition to the proposed introduction of the Irish scripture text book into the State schools, or any other interference with the present educational system. A public meeting is to be convened. Nelson, May 7. Captain Russell speaks here to-morrow night, Promising reports are coming from Taitapu (Collingwood) as to the discoveries of auriferous stone. Auckland, May 7. A New Woman's Society has been started, called the Women's Democratic Union. The object stated is to educate themselves and their fellow women to realise their responsibility politically and in all things for the advancement of the people. The Surveyor-General visited Tongariro and Ngaruahoe. One of the lakes has disappeared in the fissures, and at Ngaruahoe there are great changes. This Day. Mr W. R. Wills, a well known local poet, died this morning from stoppage of the bowels, aged 60. He only took to his bed on Wednesday. Christchurch, This Day. Two short, sharp, shocks of earthqvake were felt this morning, first at 1.55, the second about an hour later. The Brunner Fund to date totals j-5184. Greymouth, This Day. . The Brunner Royal Commission is sitting to-day. The press is excluded.
