«. . Mass in Feilding nest Sunday at 11 a. in Mr Neill, of Sauson, offers ten shillings reward for the recovery of a cow and calf gone astray. We have to acknowledge receipt of the annual report of the Colonial Mutual Life Assurance Society for 1895. Government have purchased 400 acres of land at Ormond for close settlement from Mr A. B. Newman, the price paid being JH2O per acre. The entries for Mr Carr's Apiti sale on May 11th are advertised to-day. This promises to be a big sale, and should mark a new era in tho history of that prosperous settlement. The Birmingham creamery will close down for the winter in a few days. The milk supply during the past summer at this creamery exceeded that of the previous summer. The potato crop in the Kiwitea district is somewhat lighter than usual this year. This is attributed to the long spell of dry weather experienced during the past summer having prevented the full development of the tuber. It is understood that the appointment of Attorney- General will be made at a full meeting of the Cabinet next month. The statement is revived that the portfolio will be given to Mr A. It. Guinness the member for the Grey. Messrs Wood and Judkins announce that they will hold their usual auction sale on Saturday next. To suit the convenience of buyers the sale will commence at 1.80 p.m. instead of 2 p.m. as heretofore. Land Nationalisation is impossible until the word " conquest " is deleted from all languages. There is not a square foot of habitable land on the surface of the earth which has not at one time or another been acquired by that means. To-day the eldest son of Mr William L. Bailey, of Taonui, was married at Hunterville. Several Feilding ladies and gentlemen went up by train this morning to assist at the ceremony. We wish the newly married couple every happiness. MrWoollams, chemist, wishes it known that he is now importing direct from England and America, drugs, chemicals, rubber goods and toilet articles, etc. A consignment is now about to land. He will thus be enabled to give clients the benefit of direct importing. We understand that notwithstanding the statute passed last session prohibiting the shooting of pigeons, the natives have been destroying a great number at Te Rimu — in fact setting the Statute law at defiance. It is a matter the police shonld look into. — Chronicle. The Nelson Colonist is informed by a Nelson fruitgrower that he estimates that 150,000 cases of fruit have been shipped from Nelson this season, and notwithstanding the duty now charged on imported fruit the local grower received less on the whole than he did last year. Great interest was taken in the election of a committee for the Aratika school, no less than ten householders being nominated for the five seats. The following were declared elected :— Geo. Allerby, S. Gray, R. Brown, J. G. Poulsen, and Jas. Whittaker. The three former were members of the old committee. At a political meeting held recently, a Scotch shoemaker with a local reputation for humour, asked one of the candidates for Parliamentary honours the following poser : — "' Is Maister Wulson in favour of spending thairty-six millions on the army and navy, an' only twelve millions on education ; that is to say, twelve millions for pittin' brains in, and thairty-six millions for blawin' brains oot. The auction sale of Mr J. P. Cowie's drapery stock was conducted yesterday by Mr Judkins, of the firm of Messrs Wood and Judkins, in the absence from town of Mr Charles Carr. The stock being too heavy to get through in one day, Mr Cowie has decided to offer the remainder at Messrs Wood and Judkins auction mart on Saturday next. The sale will commence at 1.30 p.m. Says the newly established Hastings Standard : — A splendid sample of goldbearing quartz was submitted for inspection a day or two ago to a well- ; known jeweller of experience in Hastings. The usual tests revealed the fact that the stone was highly impregnated with gold. The quartz was portion of a small parcel of stone lately forwarded from the Patea district. The discoverer of the reef has applied for the usual protectional rights. The financial meeting of the local Court of Foresters was held last evening. There was a fair attendance of the members. The balance sheet for the past quarter was received and adopted which showed the Court to be ia a most prosperous condition, L 47 was added to the Sick and Funeral Fund, being the saving during the quarter, the total worth of that fund being LlO92 — an average of Ll3 per member. The question of an addition to the Hall was postponed for the present. The services of Dairy instructors and other Government officials are to be placed at the disposal of the advances to Settlers Board, with the object of faciliating the work of the Board. The Government will also suggest to the Board the advisability of allowing applications for loans to be made to superintendent valuers, who shall instruct local valuers to inspect the properties, and the applications, with their reports, will then be submitted to tlie Board. Captain Edwin wired at 1.5 p.m. today : — N. to W. and S.W. gale with rain after ten hours from now, glass fall. New advertisements appear in our wanted column from Mr John Cobbe in which something of interest will be found. 4. new advertisement will appear in to-morrow's issue from Mr John Cobbe, Brick store, Feilding, which will be well worth the perusal of our readers. The sudden death is announced of Miss Margaret Saunders, the youngest daughter of Mr Joseph Saunders, Wellington. The deceased young lady died at Sumner, where she had gone on a visit. — Standard. A rifle match was fired at Mar ton yesterday between the Rangitikei Royal Rifles and the Palmersthn North Rifles, resulting in a win for the former by 346 points to 332. The ranges were 200 and 300 yards, seven men a-side. Mi' Wakeman, who started from Napier on Tuesday night to lower the bicycle record to Wellington, failed to accomplish the task, end, as he did not put in an appearance, it is supposed that his machine broke down. — Times. The usual monthly meeting of the Bunnythorpe Temperance Society was held on Tuesday evening, the church being crowded. Mr J. Dixon presided. A most enjoyable programme was provided, an interesting feature being an address by Mrs Litlle on Prohibition, in reply to the Rev Mr Richards' remarks on the State control of the liquor traffic. The following were elected a school committee at the meeting of householders held at Apiti on Monday evening last: — Messrs A. Cartwright (17), Duncan (17), Rae (16), Cox (15), Osbome (15), McMeekan (14), Gascoigne (13). Messrs Phillips, Buckman and Rankin were also nominated. Mr A. Cartwright was elected chairman at a subsequent meeting of the committee. A largely attended Band of Hope meeting was held last evening, presided over by Mr Wood, "who made an excellent chairman and contributed several interesting items to the programme. Recitations were given by Miss Rhoda Fidler, Stanley Shearer, Phoebe Thompson and Eva Doherty ; organ solos by Miss Greenwood, Miss Hamilton and Miss Bray ; a dialogue by four girls went off well : Mr C Wickham gave two performances on bis unique instrument, which was well received ; a dnet by the Misses Kyte was good ; and Miss Rosoman gave a recitation in good style.
