How Disease is Spread.

o (Per Press Association.) Christchurch, March 20. At a meeting of the City Council the Sanitary Committee presented a report on two visits of the inspector to slaughter houses in the vicinity of Christchurch. On the first visit, in one or two cases, they were found in a very dirty condition. The majority were fairly clean, aud in two or three instances, perhaps, no fault as to cleanliness, was to be fonnd. All these slaughterhouses had piggeries attached to them, and, with one notable exception, these were in a most disgusting and filthy condition. From the moment sheep or cattle are killed and hung up to cool they are immersed in a bath of tainted atmosphere. The process of decay begins at once, and in the hot weather gets more than its fair share of blame. The committee thought it right not to mention names, but to write privately to all owners, pointing out the objectionable features, and requesting to have them remedied at once, and, on tbe otber hand expressing pleasure iv those instances where matters were found in a commendable state. The Committee pointed out the need for rigid inspection of all carcases, and recommended that until the question of abbatoirs was settled, the understanding should be come to with the Selwyn County Council, whereby their inspector should have equal power iv the city to inspect and condemn or destroy, if accessary, all animals or meat exposed for sale that are not in a fit condition to uso as human food. The consideration of the report was deferred to next meeting. __________________
