New Caledonia Escapess
O r (Per Press Association.) Sydney, This Day. The French Consul denies the state- ) ment that there arc hundreds of Nov- . mean escapees in Sydney. For the last 3 two years not a single escapee landed i who has not been arrested and extradit- , cd. He points out there are two classes , oiliberes: Those who have fulfilled their 5 imprisonment and been allowed to leave ) the Island, and those who have served > their term and been afterwards compelled to stay in Noumea. It is possible there may be hundreds of the former [ who have acquired the right to leave and have gone to other colonies, but they aie not of a dangerous class. The police i authorities, however, reiterate that there ' are a hundred liberes and escapees in ' Sydney, and deny the Consul's eon teni tion that they are not of a dangerous i class. They state they are having a most . pernicious effect in introducing new cri- > minal methods. Many of the liberes are 1 of the worst type of criminals. M-^-^-i-— l -HB-B-B ■_
