On Lemons.

The virtues of the lemon are extolled as follows by an enthusiast in these fruits:— " There is no end to the good uses of lemons. They are cooling to the blood, and acceptable in sickness and in health. A lemon eaten before breakfast every morning, with or without sugar, is a wonderful invigorator. Thejniceofa lemon slightly diluted with water, before each meal, will reduce too abundant flesh. Rheumatism can often be entirely broken up by taking the juice of two lemons id half a glass of water three times a day, before meals. We have seen a stubborn case yield in a few days to this remedy ; another case, where it had no effect, was soon overcome by keeping the feet for half-an-hour every evening in hot water in which potatoes had been boiled, mashing the potatoes and allowing them to remain in the water. Nothing is so good as a lemon to remove stains from the bands and whiten them." Another authority, however (Dr Parnell) speaking of the value ot lemons* says they are not good for everybody, but they do good in certain oases of rheumatism,- and act as | an antiscorbutic, appearing to have some action in changing the blood. He would not use them if he had eczema, but they might be good for him if he were bilioost They are a speculative remedy. You may eat lemons as you would eat oranges, so far as quantity is concerned, but having less sugar in them than the latter, they are not so pleasant to take.
