(Per Press Association) Wangamji, March 5. Spiendiil weather, a lame attendance aud exciting sport were the features of the opening day. With exception of the Cup race aud hurdles, the finishes were not very exciting, but the former race alone was worth going a loug way to see. Wanganui Two - year - old Stakes, 6 furlongs— Annilla 1, Defiance 2, St Paul 3. Won by two lengths. Time, lnain 18scc. Dividend, £3 18s. First Hack Race, 1 mile and a distance — Disraeli 1, Splinter 2, Dummy 3. Won easily by two lengths ; a neck between second and third. Time, 2min 2 2-sscc. Dividend, £2 16s. Flying Handicap, ■} mile — Sedgcbrook 1, Flying Shot 2, Orion ;.>. A protest was entered by the owner of Waiulcu, one of the; unplaced horses, on the ground that Sedgebrook's rider had struck young Russell (Waiuku's rider) over the face with his whip. The stewards uphold the protest, and the race went to Flying Shot, who paid £'4 10s.
