V.J.C. MEETING.

Melbourne, March 3. There was a nice cool day for tho second day's racing, and the attendance was quite up to that of Saturday. The Governor and suite was among those present. Hova looked a much improved horse from Saturday, and ran a good race in tlie Cup, but tho magnificent way in which Wallaco finished under his heavy burden emphasises the fact that the latter could not have lost tho St. Leger except for tlie dilatory tactics of his pilot. The excellence of his performance is enhanced by the fact that half a mile from home Gough was hard at work on the favorite. Following aye the results : — Hurdlus, 2,«- miles— The Artist 1, Figaro % Navarino 3. Won by five lengths. I Time, 4miu 58sec. Ascot Vale Stakes, G furlongs — NewI haven 1, Kobold 2, Tire 3. Won easily by three lengths. (No time was cabled). Australian Cup, 2.[- miles. Idolator (C. Power) 1 Wallace (J. Cough) 2 Hova (J. Hayes) 3 Quiver (C. Ettridge) ... 4 Other starters - Music, Dreamland, Preston, Chesterman, Elswick,| Lord Richmond, Wolf, Lucid, Laura. Betting — 4 to 2 against Wallace, sto 1 Lord Richmond, (5 to 1 Dreamland, Quiver, 7 to 1 Hova, 12 to 1 Preston, Music, 20 to 1 Idolator, Laura. There was an even start, and it was sometime before the colors of any horse were prominent. Then Lucid aud Hova came out of the ruck slightly in advance of Music, with Chesterman last. Passing the stand Lord Richmond threaded Ins way through into third place, followed closely by Preston, Quiver, Idolator a-nd Wallace. Much the same order prevailed until the field approached the six furlong post when Quiver moved up aud Gough began to move on the favorite. The Trenton mare held her own to the turn, and was the first to show the way into the straight, her nearest attendants being Idolator, Lord Richmond, and Hova with Wallace coming fast on the outside. When fairly inside the distance Idolator took command and looked to be an almost certain winner till the favorite came with a desperate run in the last half furlong. Idolator, however, struggled on gamely aud secured the judge's verdict by half a head, llova two lengths away third. Time, 3oiiu 59.lsee.
