Correspondence.

MATTERS POLITICAL - POLICY OF THE RECONSTRUCTED CABINET. TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — Just a line or two to draw the attention of the public to the two following facts clearly shown between the lines of the policy as enunciated by the Premier:— lst That State Socialism has been a failure ; 2nd That the only real prosperity in the colony at the present time is in that part of the country where £3,000,000 of British capital has been invested in the Thames goldmines, and where, according to Mr Seddon, " one thousand more miners are employed than there were a year ago." In other words, where the State has allowed fixity of tenure and a fair and free scope to capital and individualism, everybody has benefited, merchants, storekeepers, tradesmen, and laborers— vide Customs returns, Auckland, 1895, — but where the State has thrown its octopus arms over the energies of the people, capital has been frightened, industries have languished, and laborers have been starved. I am, etc., George Wilks. Feilding, February 24th, 1896.
