The Minister of Lands at Christchurch.
p (Per Press Association.) Christchusch, February 7. The Minister of Lands addressed a crowded meeting at the Opera House to night. He was well received and had an attentive and orderly bearing. He said his object was to reply to the attacks on tbe land policy and administration. Some found fault with the slow progress but when they took 40 years' agitation to abolish slavery in England, surely the present Government bad not bad too long to reform the land system. He had brought down the Re-valuation Bill, but the- House negatived the revaluation without freehold. He reviewed the Liberal land legislation of the late Mr Bal lance and declared the present land laws in New Zealand tbe most liberal of any country. Government bad purchased 20 estates, of which 12 were in Canterbury. Seven others were in treaty. The system wag working well. They had money to purchase land if suitable. Government had purchased 1.500,000 acres of native lands at a cost of $L vote' of thanks and confidence in the GoVerniaent ; 17&S carried by a very la'r&e majority',- '^ ■-■■».. '^ ■' ,
