Correspondence.

TO THE EDITOK. \ Sik, — In your report of the proceed* ' ings of the Council meeting held last i Thursday evening, I notice that my application for the use of the Chambers to hold the meetings of Athletic Clubs, &c, therein was refused. In -view of my remarks contained in the application to the effect that the request was made in the true interest of sport, and, ' further that there was no necessity for me to dwell on the too apparent objections of the present necessitated custom, viz : That of holding meetings in Hotels, and my assurance to His Worship the Mayor that the Clubs or Associa- I tions would be quite prepared to see that the Council was at no loss financially if permission was granted ; yet the request is refused. Am I to infer that this Council do not acknowledge the beneficial effect upon any community of 5 sport and athletics ? or perhaps the furnishings might be damaged. Further, this " generous " Council forget that it is the practice in large towns (where there are other rooms at convenience) the Council Chambers are given for the purposes mentioned. Wanganui for instance does so. I very much regret that such a conservative spirit permeates the members comprising the Council, and I do trust; th,at if new tyood will alter the present state of things it may not bp long in fprthcoming. la cqnclusion X thank Messrs Shearer and Gould for the support they accorded tp my request.' i am, &c, Akthub G.
