The Recent Poisoning Case.

In connection with the recent poisoning sensation, by which Mr G. H. Saywell's family and several guests suffered from the effects of partaking of raspberry vinegar, three bottles of the vinegar were procured by the police from the maker in Christchurch and a portion was analysed by Mr A. W. Rickerton, Government analyst. It will be seen from the following report, receivod by the police, that Dr Sorley's analysis has been confirmed : — " Canterbury College, Laboratory Department. January, 1896. — Report of the analysis of a sample of raspberry vinegar and of aniline crystals received from the Inspector of Weights and Measures, Christchurch. — ' The sample contains a trace of arsenic equivalent to -77 per cent, of the dry crystals. The amouut taken in an ordinary driak is as nearly as possible l-4000th of a grain, being about l-300th of the ordinary medical dose. I am, therefore, of opinion that this sample of raspberry vinegar as a drink is quite harmless so far as the arsenic contained in it is concerned. — A. W. Rickerton, Colonial Analyst.' "
