TREMENDOUS HEAT IN AUSTRALIA.

GLASS REGISTERS 119 IN THE SHADE. LARGE NUMBER OF DEATHS RECORDED. (Per Press Association.) Sydney, Jan. 13. Tremendous heat was experienced in the city to day, beating all records. At 8.30 this morning the thermometer reached the unprecedented height of 95*8 in the shade, and increased rapidly until it registered 108*5 at 2 o'clock. Horses dropped dead in the streets. A visitor from New Zealand, named Sybney Merewether, received sunstroke in Hunter street, and died in the hospital shortly afterwards. Two laborers named Quinn and Kane, working in the city, were struck and died on reaching the hospital. Many other cases were admitted for treatment, several of whom are in a very critical condition. At Bourke the thermometer registered 110 in the shade, and eight deaths are reported, the victims being Mrs Conway, four men named MacDougall, Daubigny, Moore, and Harkorn, and three children named Johnson, Boon, and Mutton. At Broken Hill three deaths from the effects of the heat occurred, viz, Messrs Ayres, Littlejohn, and Newlove. A strong southerly is coming along the coast, and it is expected to reach Sydney about midnight. It will mitigate the oppressiveness. Later. The heat wave has been dispelled by a cool southerly breeze, which set in to-night. Two more deaths from the effects of the excessive heat have occurred at Bourke, while one death is recorded at Wellington, one at Singleton, and four at Albury, the latter being young children.
