Soundings by the Penguin.

(Per Press Association.) Wellington, Jan. 8. After leaving Tonea, H.M.S. Penguin which arrived to-day from the South Sea Islands, was engaged in taking soundings, and obtained bottom at depths varying from 5022 fathoms to 5155 fathoms. The latter sounding was obtained in latitude 30-24 south, longitude 176-39 west. Red clay was brought up at the greatest depths. It took 21 hours to obtain the 5155 fathoms sounding, and 3h hours to haul the wire on board again by hand. After coaling here, the Penguin leaves for tlie Bluff on Saturday, taking soundings en route. From the Bluff she proceeds to Hobart, taking a line of soundings on the run across.,
