The charges made by an ex-patient of the Mount View Lunatic Asylum have, on enquiry before Mr Martin, S.M., fallen to the ground. The piece of land advertised for sale yesterday with cottage and orchard, should be half an acre and not quarter of an acre as then stated. The Standard says:— We learn tha* an action for breach of promise is pend* ing against a Palmerston resident, dam ' ages being assessed at .£IOOO. The Manawatu Farmer reports that a settler near Levin in sinking a well came on some gravel and blue clay. He panned off seven shovels full of the stuff and got a few specks of fine gold. Last night during the thunderstorm a lady was asked " Are you frightened ? " the startling reply was " I haven't got time for my sister is in a fit, and she takes all my time to look after her ! " Messrs Barraud and Abraham, of Feilding and Palmerston North, have accepted the agency of the Royal Insurance Company, which claims to be the wealthiest and most liberal Fire Insurance Company in the world. An advertisement appears in another column to-day from Messrs Hayne and Lloyd, wholesale agents for this district drawing attention to Llewellj'n's Bee Ointment, which may be obtained from any of the storekeepers throughout the district. He is, also, clearing at low prices the balance of his summer goods of all descriptions. Dr Findlay, Wellington, in the course of a recent lecture on " Sentiment in Socialism " declared the woman herself was responsible for the evils under which her sex snffered. Her rage for cheapness contributed largely to the starvation wage paid to so many of her sex. Mr E. J. Searl informs us (Wairarapa Times) that he intends instituting an action for damages against Mr T. In the senior scholarships twenty-three were examined. At Hamilton West swimming baths on Sunday last, the Rev. T. H. Long had just come out of the water and was drying himself when he broke a blood vessel and vomited blood freely. Medical assistance was sent for, but he died in a very few minutes. The deceased was a son of the Rev. J. Long, the well-known Primitive Methodist Minister, and had long been in a most delicate state of health. Our readers will be pleased to learn that although the Rev W. Judkins has, through lack of strength, been compelled to leave ministerial work for a time, he intends to settle down in our midst. Mr Judkins and Mr James Wood will commence business as Wool Brokers and General Commission agents in the office lately occupied by Mr T. H. James, Architect, Kimbolton road. The business will be carried on under the name of Wood and Judkins.- We wish the new firm every success infheir venture. An amusing scene occurred recently, when a swarm of bees settled on a man standing in one of the streets of the Borough, choosing for the point of settlement a part of the body which a brave man never turns to the enemy ! Shortly afterwards a person from whose premises the bees had started came to claim the swarm, and the nice little question which arose between these two as to ownership was complicated by the claim of a third, who had, we suppose, seen the bees in transit and followed them. The contest had not, at latest advices, ceased. — Exchange. If elder brothers were to follow the example of those in the " good old times " there would be fewer drowning accidents. For instance, when a lot of boys, attending Wheeler's school in Wellington 40 years ago were bathing off the beach at Te Aro flat the younger of two brothers went out too far and " let a yell out of him " as he sank. The elder brother swam out, lugged the offender ashore and gave him such a thrashing as he never will forget in his life. He was always a good swimmer afterwards and saved life — but he never was reckless. They were practising with the fire brigade reel and hose on the beach in a northern town recently, and the spectators included a number of open-mouthed Maoris who, upon occasion, got too near to preserve themselves absolutely from moisture. It is apparently easy to hold a branch and shoot water into the air. At least thought an aboriginal who, at the invitation of a fireman, seized and held a nozzle much to the envy of his dnsliy brethren. His triumph was short iiyed, however, for just as he had struck a magnificent attitude, the pressure was turned ou at full. Immediately there was a spectacle of a somersaulting Maori, a writhing branch and water, a daylight Catherine wheel, Maori on top one moment, branch victorious the next, and the wheel enshrouded in a deluge of vrater.
