Shocking Fatal Accident.
A fearful accident happened on the special tram leaving Wellington at 11 p.m. on Christmas Eve, just as it was stopping at Paremata, on the Manawata line. A girl of 17, named Jenny Connell, wag standing on the platform, and as it is conjectured, attempted to alight bethe train stopped. She fell under the carriage and a wheel went right over her neck and shoulder, almost severing the head. Death was almost instantaneous. The body was taken to Paikakariki, where an inqnest was held. It is said that a brother and sister of deceased, all belonging to Wanganui, were on the train.
(Per Press Association) Wellington, Dec. 26. Miss Connell lived at Wanganui with her parents, and came down to Wellington on Saturday last on her way to | visit some relations at Paremata. On i Christmas Eve she and a cousin named Lucy Gastroe started from Wellington by train, and as the train was entering the Paremata station it is supposed that Miss Connell, seeing her uncle on the platform, made a jamp on ho the platform without waiting for the train to pull up. The result was that she fell backward between the platform and the moving carriages, several of which passed over her head. As sooa as the train was stopped Guard Mc,Farlane lifted up the poor girl, but she was quite dead, her head being badly smashed and one of her arms was almost torn off tho body- The guard had the body conveyed to Paikakariki, where an inquest was held yesterday morning, and the jury returned a verdict of accidental death, adding that no blame was attachable to anyone.
