It has been decider! to hold the Cable Conference in Sydney. "We are sorry to hoar from Wanganni,! that Mr W. F. Downes' condition shows no sign of improvement. There will be a meeting of the Athletic Sports Committee at Mr SherwiU's office this evening at eight o'clock. Owing to pressure on our space we are compelled to hold over a number of letters to the editor and other matter. Arrangements are being made to test tbe efficacy of gun-cotton fog signals at Pencairow Head, Wellington, at a cost of 1-350. Mr Hartley's Cheese Factory and house, at Pohangina, have been burned down. There was only a small insuranoe and Mr Hartley is a considerable loser Mr Donald Ross, of Wanganui, is seriously ill, suffering from blood-poison-ing, and bis unconscious state is causing grave anxiety. A magic lantern entertainment for children will be given in the Presbyterian Church this evening. Admission will be free, but a collection will be made to defray expenses. A great photographic camera for taking full length life-size portraits has been made and used with much success by a Dublin firm. The camera takes a plate 7ft high by sft wide. We have to thank the publishers Messrs Innes and Co of Hawera, for a copy of the Star almanack and West Coast Directory for 1896. It is well got up and carefully compiled. The Marlborougb. Express understands that Mr R. Donald, farmer, has issued a writ against the Bank of New Zealand claiming i'sooo damages for lodging a petition in bankruptcy against him, and for defamation of character. On Christmas eve the Feilding Brass Band, under the conductorship of Mr R. F. Haybittle, played some very beautiful and appropriate selections in excellent style. They visited one portion of the town, and on New Year's eve the other part will be similarly favored.
* The quarterly meeting of the Manchester Lodge of Oddfellows will be held this evening. The principal business will be the election of officers. The Manawatu Cricket team left this morning for Hawke's Bay where four matches will be played. The team is a fairly strong one and should give a good account of itself. We understand the tickets are going off well in connection with Mrs Coppen's guessing competition. The competition will close on Monday afternoon next and intending investors should make early application for the balance of the tickets unallotted. On New Year's I>ay the fourth annual garden party in connection with the Primitive Methodists will be held at the residence of Mr J. Gould, Denbigh street, when tbe public are invited to attend this popular gathering for which elaborate preparations are being made. We are informed by Mr James, the architect, that the Borough Council will I take possession of the new Municipal i Buildings on Monday. Mr James will be on the premises to-morrow in tbe morning and afternoon, when he will be glad to show visitors over the building. A man who exemplified the saying about the wine being in and tbe wit out had a narrow escape in the menagerie last nigbt. He was inanely stroking a lion, when the animal turned on him with a roar, but an attendant knocked the man down just before tbe lion's jaw touched his arm. — Standard. Last evening about 8 o'clock, some thoughtless person ignited a heap of rubbish in a back yard. The flames were quickly seen, and the firebell was rung. Tbe brigade turned out but fortunately their services were not required. When those in fche Assembly Rooms beard tbe firebell there was a rush for the doors, and had the latter not been specially constructed to meet such a contingency there would have been some persons seriously injured. Tuesday's Post says:— Among other Christmas greetings to tho people are tbe appointment of the Hon. Dowuie Stewart to the office of Attorney-General, wbicb. is, we believe, to be announced in a special issue of the Gazette to-day, and the appointment of the Hon. Mr Reeves as Agent-General, which fact may or may not be announced to-day. Mr Reeves' successor in the Government will probably be found in Mr Thomas Thomson, of Auckland, or Mr Joyce, of Lyttelton.
