SCHOOL PRIZES— WHAT ARE . THEY GIVEN FOR? TO THE EDITOR. Sib, — I would like to ask the School Committee if it is a fact that the prizes given to the school children at the concert last night were bought in Wanganui. Surely they could have been supplied by Mr Carthew and Mr Milson. I would like to ask, also, if passing the standards does not merit a prize. I saw no prize given to some boys who have passed in standards for two years in succession. Why are prizes given to boys and girls who failed at the Inspector's examination? Is the Committee or the head teacher a better judge of a child's work than the Inspector ? I trow not. Again, why were so many prizes given to the Committeemen's children, some of whom have never passed an examination ? I am, etc., Old Father Christmas.
