(Per Press Association'). Auckland, Dec. 20. The Paeroa section of the Thames Valley Railway was opened to-day by the Hon. A. J. Cadrnan in the presence of a large assemblage, a good, many visitors being present from Auckland aud intermediate stations. Mr Cad to an expressed the hope that the line would be completed to the Thames. The sum of 4 50,000 would do it. Messrs Kelly and McGowan, M.H.K.'s and the Hon. Jennings, M.L.C., also spoke. The London Missionary Society's new scbooner Olive Branch was launched at Lane and Brown's shipbuilding yards, Wbangaroa, and leaves for Thursday Island aud New Guinea in a fortnight's time. Wellington, December 20. After five days' sitting the jury in J. Brown's case (alleged illegal operation; retired at 9.40 but at 11 o'clock had not come back. This Day. A. L. Webster, late clerk of the Gteytown North Borough Council, pleaded gnilty to three charges of embezzlement, and was sentenced to six months. Wanganui, Dec. 20. Mr F. R. Jackson, who for the fourth time was elected to the Mayoralty unopposed waa installed to-night. He was the subject of hearty congratulations and eulogistic references at the hands of all Councillors present. Napiee, This Day. The Land Board yesterday passed a resolution, urging the Government to take steps to acquire Piripiri and Ngapurupurn native blocks for the purposes of close settlement.
