Wellington Abortion Case.

o BROWN SENTENCED TO 18 YEARS' IMPRISONMENT. (Per Press Association) Wellington, This Day. In the Supreme Court this morning the Crown Prosecutor entered a nolle prosegui in two other indictments against John Henry Brown for performing an illegal operation, and also in the other charges against Annie Brown. In answer to the usual question Brown complained a third indictment had been brought against him at the eleventh hour and evidently in the two previous charges had been used by the Crown to secure a conviction against him on the third indictment. This, he urged was nothing less tnan an outrage upon justice. He said His Honor had placed every obstacle in the way of bis defence which Mr JelHcoe had, nevertheless, conducted in an able manner. Judge Prendergast sentenced the prisoner to eighteen years' penal servitude. He said he had no doubt he bad been carrying on this business for some time. Out of the treasury accumulated from his wretched trade Brown had sent away his partner, a drunken sot, in order that he might not be able to give evidence against biro. Eves a burglar and a thief would not have taken such a course. His Honor was satisfied the accused himself was responsible for the trade. His Honor said the young women, who had been convicted in the case in coming forward and giving evidence, as they had done, had performed a public duty, and their action would go towards redeeming their characters. The sentence in Annie Brown's case was formerly postponed till after the Appeal Court's decision.
