(Per Press Association). Wellington, December 19. J Hon. Mr Montgomery's resignation from the Executive Council is gazetted. Auckland, Dec. 19. A prisoner named Albert Edward Alley escaped from the lockup this afternoon. There were charges of breaking and entering and larceny against him. Dunedin. Dec. 19. The Supreme Court case of Fleming and Gilkison v. Gregg was concluded to-day. On the Court resuming, it was announced that an agreement had been arrived at to leavo to the iury the issue of damages only, without prejudice to the right of either party to move for a new trial ; on that issue His Honor to reserve all other questions of fact and also all questions of law. The jury, after an hour's retirement, found that there was sufficient wheat in Canterbury which Fleming and Gilkieon could have bought to replace tbe 80,000 bushels sold by Mr Gregg without loss. They found one farthings damages., Invercargill, December 19. The Merrivale estate recently acquired by the Government from Ellis Bros, and cut up into 147 allotments, was balloted for today. There were 174 applicants. Mr Win. Young, formerly manager of the Colonial Bank here, has been appointed Town Clerk of Invercargill. C&bistcburch, Dec. 19. A cable message from Melbourne states tbat the Victorian representatives at the Australasian Championship Athletic Meeting viz., Moir, Wmgrove, Townley, Doyle, Holt, Barrett and Wettenhal— left to-day by the Hauroto.
