CANTERBURY V. NEW SOUTH WALES.

(Per Press Association.) Christchurch, Dec. 15. The intercolonial cricket match Canterbury v. N.S. Wales, eommGnced on Saturday shortly after 2 p.m. at Lancaster Park. The play was chiefly noticeable for the slowness of the Canterbury men, who were batting over three hours for 124 runs and the visitors in half an hour have only scored 18 for 1 wicket. The wicket was good but the weather dull and bleak, and the out field on the slow side. Splendid and forcible hits were stopped over . and over again without result, and as the Sydney team are young and alert and good fieldmen, scoring was a matter of difficulty. At the same time most of the batsmen seemed to attach too much weight to the importance of the occasion. Wilding, who was the only man to bit out vigorously, was top scorer, although it must be admitted he was lucky. Lawrence batted very nicely for 26, A. Ridley played a useful innings for 14, and H. C. Ridley and Labatt scored 10 each and young Reese was run out for 8 when batting well. Hume and Noonan did most of the bowling for the Sydney men. Reese soon bowled tbe visiting captain for 2, but Pryor and Wilford played out time, Pryor having scored 13 of the 18 made. There were 2000 spectators present. This Day. At noon N.S. Wales bad lost four wickets for 76 — PordevinJ 43, not out. Dunedin, Dec. 15. The following have been selected to represent Otago in the match against the N.S. Wales cricketers :— Baker, Boddington, Clayton, Clarke, Downes, Hope, Fisher, Johnston, Raines, Rattray, and Wells.
