Durability of Australian Timber.
Mr A. W. Farqnbar, manager of the aebident branch of the Queensland Mutual Insurance Company, Limited, has just given an interesting specimen of native hardwood to the Sydney Technological Museum. The specimen is i unique, having been under water no fewer than 86 years, and is in excellent condition. During the first decade of x *be present century the log was cat from toe bush in the neighbourhood of Sydney, and was shipped as samples of New South Wales hardwood to England on the brig Boyd. The Boyd came to New Zealand, and in Whangaroa harbour she fell into the hands of the Maoris, and nearly all the white people onboard were murdered. The vessel itself was then run aground and burnt to the water's edge. On his last voyage to New Zealand Mr Farquhar secured the log above mentioned as an interesting relic of an early colonial tragedy and remarkable proof of the durability . of Australian wood. I
