A Heroic Miner.
Melboubne, Nov. 29. A shocking blasting accident happened at the Confidence Extended Mine, Bendigo. John Matthews and John Foote were working at the 1400 ft level, and Matthews was charging drilled holes with Nobel's gelatine dynamite. He was using a copper tamping bar, and suddenly an explosion occurred. Both men were hurled back. Foote managed to find bis way to the shaft and get into the cage, and by continuous ringing apprised the engine driver that an accident had occurred. He was hauled to the surface, and men then went down and brought up Matthews. Both men were terribly injured, and are now in the hospital in a critical state. It is marvellous how Foote managed to get to the shaft, for bis skull was fractured, two ribs were broken, and a hole was blown in bis body reaching nearly to the lungs. Matthews also had his skull fractured, and sustained various other injuries, including the loss of one eye and shattered elbow. Both men have been trepanned. Despite bis terrible injuries Foote dragged his mute to the flat a distance of 70 feet.— Post;.
