In the conspiracy trial the Counsel for the defence cross-examined a Crown witness, named Gail, at length with a view of proving that the expenses oftbe solicitor engaged to defend him in the bigamy proceeding brought by his wife wife were paid by the Crown, so as to secure him in this case. '_ Gail admitted I that the major portion of the expenses were not paid out of his own pocket, but by tbe proceeds of a treasury note which WBS handed him at the Treasury. He denied that, ihe crown was paying his expenses or that any arrangements were made between the Attorney-Gene-ral and the solicitor as suggested by the counsel for defence. .
