Heavy Earthquakes in Borne.

o ■ GREAT DAMAGE TO PROPERTY. (By Mail Steamer.) Auckland, This Day. The Continent was shaken by severe trembles on October 30th, 31st, and Ist November. Rome was effected severely on the morning of the last named date. The people rushed from their beds at 5.40 o'clock, and fled to the open squares. Great consternation prevailed. The convent at Santa Maggiore was greatly damaged, also many of the old palaces of the city. At the prison of Regina Coeli the terrified convicts broke into open revolt, and were only driven back by the troops from the neighbouring barracks. The shock was confined to the province of Rome. Four palaces and the Bank of Italy in the city are so fractured that they are unfit for occupation. The Pope on being awakened by the tremble betrayed no alarm. His first inquiry was for the news.
