The Balfour Frauds.
BALFOUR SENTENCED TO 14 YEARS' HARD LABOUR. (Per Press Association). London, November 28. Jabez Balfour has been sentenced to 14 years' hard labour. The Judge, in sentencing Balfour, said the prisoner's was a master mind, which planned frauds, and he obtained millions by using others, who were simply tools in his hands. The prisoner received his sentence without showing any outward emotion. Nov 29. In connection with the Liberator Building Society frauds, G. E. Brock and M. Theobald, two of the directors, were sentenced to nine months respectively. On the announcement of the sentences, the crowd in the streets cheered, and there was great excitement as the prisoners were removed. The Crown has decided not to proceed further in connection with che charges against those alleged to be implicated in the frauds.
