FEILDING J.O. SPEING MEETING. FIRST DAY. The first clay's races in connection with the Feilding Jockey Club's Spring Meeting was held yesterday, the weather j being fine but cloudy. There was a,| very large attendance during the after- ■' noon. On the whole the racing was j very good and the finishes fairly well i contested, the best being in the first race of the day, when Moonraker beat Umslopogaas by a neck. Only two favorites won, the dividends, consequently, being substantial. In the St. Andrews Handicap Leda's win was somewhat unexpected, the handsome dividend of £15 10s being paid to her supporters. A starting machine was used on the Feilding course for the first time, namely, that patented by Messrs Saywell and James, of Feilding, and the starts effected in the three races in which it was used were all that could be desired, Mr E. Woods getting the horses away well together with the exception of one or two cases where the horses were not used to the barrier. In fact, it was so successful that authorities on racing matters were loud in their praise of it, some declaring it to be the best they had seen. The arrangements were carried out without a hitch of any kind, all the officials paying every attention to the duties alloted them. Mr W. H. Hartgill acted as judge, Mr J. Scott as time keeper, and the stewards were Messrs J. Saunders, W. A. L. Bailey, W. A. Sandilands, C. A. J. Levett, B. Gosling, and H. L. Sherwill ; Mr E. J. Allen, treasurer; Mr O. Cooper, clerk of the scales, Mr R. G. Edwards, clerk of the course, and the energetic and courteous secretary Mr E. Goodbehere, upon whose attention most of the success of ! the meeting depends. As usual with Mr J. E. Henry, he succeeded in concealing the winners in each event amongst the numerous acceptors. The Feilding Brass band enlivened the proceedings with a number of selections. The publican's booth and dining room were under the care of Mr D. Barrett, of Colyton, the refreshment booth being in charge of Mr Tarlatine. The totalisator was worked by Mr Hill and put through L 3581 during the day, against £3147 for the first day last year. Some complaints were made that the seats in the grand stand were not so clean as they might have been, and would have been all the better for a scrubbing. Following are the results : — Flying Handicap, of 50 soys; second horse 5 soys fcoux stakes; six furlongs. 171 Mr C. Siddell's Moonraker, 7-11 (W. Whittaker) ... 1 138 Mr W.
