Direct Trade With Manchester.

(Per Press Association) London, November 27. Messrs Weddell, the well-known frozen meat dealers, were banquetted by the : merchants of Manchester to celebrate the arrival of the Timaru with a cargo ; direct for that town. The Chairman of the Ship Canal presided, and said he hoped the trade would grow to huge proportions. Mr W. Weddell said the export of mutton from Australia would shortly overshadow the New Zealand trade, and declared they would fighfc the Argentine growers, and expressed a belief the marking of imported meat would prove a benefit to the colonies. Melbourne, Nov. 27. To mark the initiation of the new direct produce service, the Government has sent 500 carcases of mutton by the Gulf of Siam to the Mayor of Manchester to distribute among the poor of that city.
