Temperance Convention.
A Conyention in connection with the various 1.0. G.T. Lodges in Wellington, Hawke's Bay, and Taranaki districts, was opened at Palmerston N. yesterday in the Theatre Eoyal. Tbe G.C.T., Bro B. N. Adams, of Dunedin, was present j and occupied the chair. Amongst the delegates present were Excelsior Lodge, Campbelltown, Bro Merrett ; Hope oi Feilding, Bro Rev Cocker ; Hope of Apiti, Bro Adamson ; Hope of Halcombe, Bros Williamsou, Bennett, and Grindley. The Grand Chief Templar, Bro. R. N. Adams, read a very able paper on the "Early History of the Order," in which its growth, from its earliest inception in 1851 to the present day was traced. Bro. Haggen read a paper on " Aggressive work," bringing out the following points :— *• Reform of the Upper House ;" " Abolition of Party Government ;" •* Active organisation ;" # " Stand by the principles of Prohibitiioa. ,, Bro. Thompson, G.E.P- (Welhngton), read a paper on " The work of electoral superintendents and deputies." After discusssion a resolution was carried urging on political agents the necessity for active measures being taken to secure the best results at next election. Papers were read by Bro. Petherick (Wellington) and Bro. Rev. Cocker (Feilding) on the subject " A total abstinence crusade." Bro. Rev. Quintrell then read a paper on the appointment of special correspondents to represent the Order in the daily press. It was resolved, That Bros. Gndley (Wellington), Cocker (Feilding), Howell (Napier), Grace (Palmerston), H. G. Vine (Wanganui), Williamson (Halcombe), Perm (Patea), and Eccles (Woodville), be appointed to watch the press in their various districts, and to answer any attacks that may be made on the party ; also that each of the lodges be asked to appoint a special reporter to report lodge news. It was resolved, That this convention requests the permission of the Grand Lodge to engage a lecturer to organise and travel iv the districts of Wellington, Palmerston North, Taranaki, and Hawkes Bay at a salary of £300, this sum to include travelling expenses.
