There was an uuually heavy downfall of rain this morning. The Danevirke people propose to raise a loan of £7500 for a water supply. Mr Freeman R. Jackson has consented to stand for the Mayoralty of Wanganui. The secretary of the Apiti Dairy Company, Mr B. A. Miller, advertises for a strong active youth as a cadet. An overcoat (macintosh) lost between Apiti and Birmingham is advertised for in our wanted column. Entries for Messrs Abraham and Williams stock sale at Palmerston on Thursday next are now advertised. Mr W. R. Godfrey, of Beaconsfield, invites tenders for stumping four acres of land. Tenders will close on the 23rd instant. The programme of the Birmingham Druids' Athletic Sports meeting en Friday, January 17th, 1896, will be published on Monday. At the close of the service to-morrow evening Mr Cocker will publicly receive a number of persons as members of the church. Mr Jansen, of the Wellington post office, formerly of Palmerston North, won a JEIOO prize in Tattersall's Melbourne Cup sweep. A meeting of those interested in the formation of a cavalry corps in the Kiwitea will be held in the Cheltenham Hall this evening at 8 p.m. The recent rise in wool means, it is said, an increased earning power to the Bank of New Zealand Assets Company of over £12,000 per annum. An enormous bullock was slaughtered at Warrnambool last week. The total dressed weight of the animal was 17511 b. Its tongue alone weighed 141 b, and its heart 101 b. The burgesses are invited by the Mayor, Mr Sandilands, to meet and welcome His Excellency the Governor on his arrival at the railway station at noon on Monda5 r . Mr E. M. Smith, M.H.R., has been notified, that the New Zealand Shipping Company, with their accustomed liberality, have agreed to place a second saloon passage to London at his disposal. Lucky man to have M.H.R. after his name. Train services for the Wanganui A. and P. Show on the 21st instant are advertised to-day. The convenience of intending visitors to the show has been considered and excursion tickets will be issued from all stations at very low rates. The sugar cane yield of the northern districts of New South Wales this season is estimated at 275,000 tons, which is expected to give .27,000 tons of raw suear valued at £240,000. Of this sum £170,000 would be distributed among the farmers in return for their cane. In the Public Library entertainment " Auld Robin Gray," sung by the characters as a tableau, will a be pretty sight, many of the effects in such scenes will far surpass in realism any obtained by stage scenery, being as they are, reality itself in the form of living pictures, such as would delight even John Ruskin. Among the French conscripts drawn during the present year were two women, four dwarfs, and one " fat man." The women were victims of a registrar's mistake. The height of the dwarfs work out at 4ft din., 4ft lin., 3ft 9in. and 2ft 6in. The " fat man " turned the scales at twenty-four stone and was rejected af being useless for military or any other service. Cocoanut trees have at last come into direct competition with the American cow. The American creamery in New York says : — " Way out near the end of one or the north piers of this city, in a large building is a concern styled tbe Pure Food Product Company. They are engaged in a manufacture of cocoanut butter, and turning it out at the rate of 5001 b daily, and inside of a week 10,000 lb will be the output. The following is the text of a cablegram which appeared in the Australian papers of the 20th ult., but was mutilated in transmission to New Zealand : — " The Canadian Parliament has resolved that the manufacture and sale of alcoholic liquors, except for scientific and medical purposes and for the Sacrament shall be entirely prohibited in the Dominion. This decision is, however, subject to the opinion of the Privy Council as to the legality of such an enactment." In New South Wales there is a duty on butter, bat none on cream. This difficulty is overcome by some smart South Australian farmers who have erected a butter factory inside their neighbours' border, and cart the cream over from their dairies. This particular duty was levied to give a fillip to dairy farmers in New South Wales, but much to tbe disgust of the individuals who bad hoped to benefit, tbe effect has been to swell the pockets of tbe South Australian, who is enabled to get an advance of about 2d per lb on his butter, to the price he would get in bis own district. A meeting of the Committee of tbe Feilding Athletic Club was held in Mr Sherwill's office last evening. The usual routine business having been transacted, the following judges were appointed: — Walking and running, Messrs W. A. L. Bailey, G. Say well, R, Whisker and W. Reid ; jumping, Messrs G. Y. Letbbrjdge and T. H. James. Mr E. Goodbehere was appointed referee for the bicycle racea, and Messrs W. G. Haybiitle, Fisher and James tap-scorer*. Mr Peter Thompson promised a second prize for the boy's walking ruee. Mr Reid offered £"1 as Ist and Mr Goodbehere a 2nd prize for a boy'd hurdle race, 150 yd«, over 6 hurdles. Competitors to be under 13 years and satisfactory proof of age to be given. Notice of motion was given by Mr H. Worsfold. to adopt the bye-laws of the Feilding Sports Committee.

Bailey has been elected Mayor of the Borough of Feilding, unopposed. While we congratulate Mr Bailey on his election, we also congratulate the ratepayers on securing the services of one who is so generally respected. The privileges of the Feilding races were sold yesterday by Mr C. Carr, auctioneer, as follows : - Publican's booth, Mr D. Barrett, i9l : cards, Mr G. Younger, j£3o ; refreshment booth, Mr Jos. Smith, £13 10s ; horse paddock, Mr A. Morgan, 10s. Tbe outside gates and grandstand were passed in. A well attended meeting of the Feildine Fire Brigade was held last evening, Mr P. Thompson in the chair, when resolutions were passed protesting against tbe removal of the bell-tower, as proposed by the Borough Council, and it was decided to circulate a petition for signatures in support of the protest. A deputation was appointed to wait on the Couuil on the matter. A special meeting of the Feilding School Committee was held last even- i ing. Present - Messrs Worsfold (chairruanl, Haybittle, Gould, Bray, Taylor, Shearer and Parker. Applications for the position of assistant master was received from Messrs E. W. Tompkins, Nairn, J. Harry (Normanby), and H. C. Stewart (of the Wanganui Boys High School). It was decided that the latter be recommended for appointment. Mr C. Lucas was appointed truant inspector, his duties to commence from Monday morning next. Mr Geo. Hutchison has been retained as leading counsel for the Midland Railway Company in tbe approaching arbitration proceedings, and Mr Theo. Cooper of Auckland, is to be associated with him. Tbe counsel for the Government will be Sir Robert Stoub, Dr Findlay, Mr Gullip, Mr Stringer (Christchurc) , and probably Mr Fraser (Dunedin). Tbe proceedings are to begin on the 23rd inst. The Hon E. Blake, Q.C., M.P., will be here next week, and the arbitrators (Sir Bruce Brunside, Q.C., and Sir Chas Lilley) are also expected in a few days. Mr T.
