The Timber Industry.
Mr James Freyberg, the timber expert was a visitor to Palmerston yesterday. He is making an exhaustive inspection and enquiry into the sawmilling in- , dustry, with a view to the benefit of the bushfellers and millers. The result of his labors will be presented to Parliament. Already some important facts have been gathered. For example, timber bought at the mills at 5s to 6s is being resold in Wellington at prices varying from 12s 6d to 15s. It is claimed that over one thousand souls depend upon the mills between Wellington and Palmerston alone. Mr Freyberg hopes to meet all sawmillers from the Hawke's Bay district and the Forty Mile Bush early next month at some town selected by themselves. He is now engaged on a tour through the whole of the North Island, after which he is to do the same for the South Island. The Government has given him a free hand to gather facts for the organisation of the timber trade in view of the important opening in Europe. Our readers may remember that he has been working steadily in London with Sir Westbv Percival to create a trade for the colony, and Mr Freyberg's present work is a continuation of the scheme.— Manawatu Times.
