The debtor attributed bis b bankruptcy to the expense hs was put • to in altering and improving his pre--1 mises ; that the shops when fitted up • did not pay ; that the business proved i bad ; and that his wife had been ill for • over a year. Penberthy, £2; total, £102 18s 9d. ■ Assets— Furniture, £60; book debts, estimated to produce £60 ; total, £120. i Debtor was examined at length as to his ; transactions since he had started busi--1 ness in Feilding in July, 1889, as a i boardinghouse-keeper ; he thought the I valuation placed on his furniture a fair I one ; he arrived at the valuation by 1 guess work ; he had paid £103 to Mr L Pope for carpenters' work and in ad- » dition to this he paid various other sums > away for improvements ; received about 25s a week for rent of shops ; was supposed to pay Mrs Macarthur 16s a week \ rent for the premises ; during the past twelve months did not increase his liaI bilities by more than £14 or £15 ; the total amount of his book debts was ; £132 ; worked in Hawke's Bay for about ; two years, the money he earned going i to pay his back debts ; while he was • away the boardinghouse was carried on ■ by Mrs Halley ; none of the furniture 1 belonged to his wife ; the money paid to Mr Pope was taken from the rent he , received for the shops; kept a bank i account, which was in his wife's name ; i all his furniture above the value of £25 t had been seized by the bailiff in satis- ■ faction of a claim for rent. It was re- ; solved, That the debtor be authorised to ' collect his book debts at a commission i of 10 per cent, the proceeds to be handed to the D.O.A.
