AN EXCITING RACE.
AN EXCITING RACE. Describing the five mile race at the Adelaide carnival, in which Parsons defeated Zimmerman, the Melbourne Argas says pace-makers were provided, but in one or two instances proved a failure, on account of the dilatoriness of the men. In getting off from the start the pace was made very hot, it being evidently Parsons' intention to break up Zimmerman, who was lying second, while the local men with the exception of Courtney soon dismounted. When half the journey had been accomplished Zimmerman took the lead from Parsons bat after a lap had been ridden, the previous order was reverted to. Many of the laps were very fast, and it was clear that Zimmerman was feeling the pace. At the final turn the real tight for supremacy commenced. In the last half of the lap, when the pace increased tremendously, both riders made a desperate struggle, Zimmerman having the outside running, but on coming up the straight the champion, if anything, lost ground slightly, and from thousands of throats astonished cries of " Zimmerman's beaten " proclaimed that Parsons was the winner, the Victorian finishing two lengths ahead of his opponent in 12£min, then ensued a scene such as has never before been witnessed at a cycle meeting in South Australia. Before the competitors had time to dismount, thousands of persons rushed into the arena to get a closer glimpse at the winner, the wildest excitement prevailing. The crowd blocked the track, one spectator being knocked clown by Zimmerman's wheel, while a collision with another cycle brought the American on to his hands and knees. Courtney also had to dismount. Meanwhile, Parsons was being edged shoulder-high through the sea of waving hats, and the remarkable display of enthusiasm continued uutil the dressing rooms were reached, the uproar beiug indescribable. —Post.
